The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you." Psalm 32:8

Jesus Loves Me This I KNOW

If I have been learning anything over the course of the past few weeks, it's a new revelation of the love of Christ. It's one thing to accept that Jesus loves you, but to really know that you know that you know without a shadow of a doubt is another. This means when my plans don't turn out the way I envisioned, I know that His ways are higher, His thoughts are higher than my own, He has a bigger picture in mind. And how do I know this? Because I KNOW His love for me. Knowing goes beyond feelings. Some days, I wake up and I don't always feel that love from my Creator, but I still know it stands true down deep in my heart. I know He is a good God, He promises in His Word that my future is in His hands. I know that He gives good gifts to His children (Matt. 7:11).

Knowing is the confidence that whatever you believe is true. In order to know these things, I had to first believe them. I believe[d] Him at His Word because of the love He has for me. I am able to believe that He wants the best for me in every area of my life. Once I began believing that God wants the best for me simply because He loves me, I stopped worrying. I stopped worrying about my future because I know that He's able to guard what I've entrusted to Him until it comes to pass (2 Tim. 1:12). I once heard it said, "When you know how much He loves you, you know there's nothing He wouldn't do for you" -Jeremy Pearsons.

I believe that the enemy, satan, specifically targets women and girls in the area of self-worth which then leads to actions of depression, suicide, self-harm, etc. The enemy knows that once we receive a revelation of just how much Christ loves us, we are unstoppable. If he can get us to buy into the lies that we are not worthy enough to be loved and pursued, then he thinks he's won. The very nature of Jesus is love. He cares for you dearly and delights in every little detail of your life (Ps. 37:23). He can be trusted, He is safe. He loves it when we come to Him with our concerns, fears, doubts. He loves to trade those fears, doubts, and unbelief for His peace and strength. He loves when we come to Him with bold faith asking and believing Him at His very Word. Whether you come in fear or faith, He is present with love.

I pray that you would receive a new revelation of the love of Christ, a knowing down deep in your heart that doesn't weaken or fade when trials and tribulation come. A knowing that takes you further than your feelings on the days you don't feel loved. A knowing that He is a good, good Father who passionately pursues you day after day simply because He loves you.

Perfectly Imperfect

How many times do we, myself included, strive to show the world how perfect our lives may look on the outside? The perfect Facebook post to inspire your followers or the perfectly filtered Instagram picture, both which display just how much we have it together. But so often that is far from the truth. Very far. We are quick to post the exciting events going on in our lives, but beneath the surface are the day-to-day tests that life brings, decisions that need to be made, and endless demands.

I admit, I plead guilty of this act of perfection.
I often stray away from things that I believe I would be less than “perfect” at in fear of failure. I spend 30+ minutes putting the “perfect” outfit together and then another 10+ styling the “perfect” curls. {I write this in my "perfectly planned Starbucks outfit", which includes an unintended deodorant stain at the bottom of my dress. Not to mention the messy curls that this Charleston shower had no mercy on as I ran into Starbucks without my matching Vera Bradley umbrella to tie the outfit together. First world problems, right?}   I strive after that perfectly pinned “Home Sweet Home” board I created on Pinterest. And for what? To deceive others in thinking I have it all together? Friends, I most certainly do not have it all together. The danger in striving after perfection, is that it sets up for discouragement when we fail and leaves a void in our heart that longs for more when we finally reach this “perfection.”

Accepting imperfection is a process. Each day, I’m learning it’s okay if I take a misstep. It’s okay if the plans I have been making change or don’t look the way I intended. God’s grace is sufficient for me, His mercies are made new every single morning. Life does go on. I’ve decided to take a new approach. Rather than striving after a “spirit of perfection”, I have chosen to strive for a spirit of excellence in all that I do. A spirit of excellence is one that leaves you confident that you left your best effort on the field. You can go to bed knowing you made the very most of your day and put your best foot forward. I’ve traded my mess of imperfect plans for God’s plan. I've traded my best for God's best. My best can only take me so far, but His best will take me to places I never could imagine. In His Word full of promises that never return void and never fail, He reminds me The plans of the Lord stand firm forever (Psalm 33:11) no matter how many times I feel as if I’ve messed them up. And when I think there’s no way for the “distorted plans” to turn into something beautiful, He reminds me “I am doing a new thing” (Isaiah 43:19).

Through my own imperfection God is able to show Himself
STRONG where I am weak
MERCIFUL when I am in need of forgiveness
LOVING when I feel unloved
PATIENT when I continue to make the same mistakes
PEACEFUL in the midst of the chaos I’ve created in my life.

I am perfectly imperfect.

His power is made perfect in my weakness (2 Cor. 12:9).

A Purpose Driven Generation

A purpose driven generation begins with us.
I believe that it is our duty, as adults in society, to pull out the giftings that God has placed on the inside of children. Once we discover these gifts and talents we must nurture and encourage them. This investment is one that is crucial to the next generation. We should be encouraging these little lives to be the best they can be with the unique gift they've been given. So many people spend their whole lives searching for their purpose and calling instead of stepping into it with boots on the ground. What if they realized their potential at a young age? Encourage kids to dream big dreams but also remember that they are looking up to us for guidance, direction, and affirmation for those dreams. If we begin speaking life into these young souls, I believe a generation of driven, confident, warriors will be raised up ready to conquer. Maybe you once pursued a hobby or passion because someone older than you realized the potential you had and took the time to voice what they saw in you.
Whether it be a young neighbor, niece/nephew, grandchild, student, son, or daughter, I encourage you to take the time to pull out gifts/strengths/talents that you see in him or her. Every child has something to offer to this world; whether they use it or not could be determined by the encouragement they may or may not receive. Set these children up to succeed. Speed bumps and learning opportunities will come along the way but failure must not be an option. What can you do to invest in the next generation?

Assignment Living

In this new chapter of my life many of you know I chose, with much prayer and consideration, to stay put in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This came as a surprise for most, if anyone knows my heart for the sweet South. However, in this season, I also believe that I have been given an assignment; I like to refer to this as assignment living- to live knowing that you've been chosen and placed in the specific city you're in for special tasks assigned to you by God.

Two months ago, I began working for Tallgrass Family Services, which is a foster care placement agency that certifies, trains, and equips foster parents as well as places foster children in homes. This has been quite the learning experience thus far. The families that I have been working with are extremely selfless, bold, and compassionate individuals. On many occasions I have had the opportunity to visit with children already placed in the home. This is my favorite part of the job. I truly believe that each encounter with a child is a divine appointment. In the few moments that I have to spend with each child, I have the opportunity to bring hope, healing, and awaken new dreams. It is my greatest honor and privilege to be given the task of praying over these precious lives who have no control over their past circumstances but believe and speak life over their futures and declare that they are not defined by their past in Jesus' Name. When I see these children, I see bright futures; doctors, pastors, counselors, teachers, CEO's. These children need someone to believe in them, someone to encourage them, someone to bring them hope. So what is my assignment? To bring hope, stand in the gap, pray without ceasing, and believe that God holds each child with His best interest in mind. While I don't know the details of what these next few months or years have in store, I do know that His plans are good and stand firm. This journey is a step-by-step process, and when I begin to see the puzzle pieces come together, I stand in awe of His faithfulness and hand at work.

Live a life worthy of the calling you have received.
Ephesians 4:1

Compelled By Compassion

As I continue to move closer and closer to the day I will walk across the stage and receive my diploma from Oral Roberts University, I can't help but look back on the "stand out" moments that have wrecked my life these past few years.  Now when I say wrecked, I mean completey transformed my views, my mindset, and my heart. I've decided to share a few stories from my practicum experience as a social work major placed in a local emergency children's shelter. Each day, children were escorted in by the police after being taken out of their homes for various reasons, such as abuse or neglect. A few of my responsibilities included monitoring the children's daily phone call to an approved parent or family member, helping the families settle in upon their intake process as well as helping them gather their belongings when they were being dismissed to a foster family.

In order to protect each child and his or her case, I have replaced their real names. Each of these stories come from weekly logs that were recorded for a class assignment.

Phone Calls:
"One boy, who couldn't be over the age of nine, asked to call the one person listed on his contact list, his previous foster mother. In the middle of their conversation he says to her, 'Mom, did you know I had a court date in March?' After she replied he asked, 'Do you know what it's for?' When she replied with a 'no' he said, 'Kyle doesn't want me anymore, he's giving me up for adoption.' I did all that I could to sit across from him and hold back the tears I wanted to cry. He continued by saying, 'I know it's a lot of paperwork, but I know you can do it. Would you adopt me?' This precious boy had a full life ahead of him to live and at the age of nine has already experienced abandonment, rejection, loneliness, and depression."

Winter:
"While I was in the office putting together files of new intakes I overheard that there was a family of two coming in that night. A strong, particular stench caught my attention and I turned around to find two barefooted young children, maybe four and six years old, wearing shorts,  short -sleeved shirts and an oversized vest. I could not believe what I was seeing. It was freezing cold outside with snow on the ground and they were dressed as if it was summertime. The stench no longer became a concern, but what I was about to hear next I haven’t forgotten since. 'Are we going to get blankets tonight?', one child asked. The social worker replied, 'YES! Blankets and your own bed. It is gong to be like a big sleepover with lots of kids!' The two children became excited. I wanted to wrap these children in my arms in that moment. The image of these children walking into the office on that cold winter’s night is one that will stay with me for some time."

Babies:
"The moment I saw the four month old baby boy my heart melted! When the caseworker asked if I’d like to hold him I jumped at the opportunity and quickly replied, 'I’d love to!' He was a mixed baby with a head full of dark, curly hair. He had chubby cheeks and the sweetest smile. I held him tightly in his swaddled blanket as I walked around the office. He would look up at me with those big brown eyes and giggle. I then took him to the nurse where she took his vital signs. I was told that he was brought in for neglect. The back of his head was flat, where he had been left in his crib for lengthy periods of time. I wasn’t quite ready to give this baby back. Luckily, a foster home was quickly found for him. One of the social workers assured me that I was a natural and asked if I wanted to take him home to the dorms. If only I really could do that I would in a heartbeat." It's these moments that are my favorite. The moments I was able to pray over the child in the short amount of time I had with him or her. Moments to speak life over them despite their past circumstances and pray for their physical and emotional healing. Once they leave my arms, with the very slim chance I will ever see them again, all I can do is believe that the Lord has nothing but the best for these precious lives.

Hugs:
"As I was finishing up my night at the shelter I noticed a petite, frail little girl wobble through the doorway of the office. She made her way over to the desk I was sitting at and reached her arms out for a hug. I leaned over and squeezed her tightly. I waved goodbye as the worker escorted her back to her assigned cottage. I had not seen the child before and began asking the social worker about her case. In the next few minutes I had learned that she had been taken out of a home where she was found laying in a crib full of her own feces. Measuring the child's development and size I guessed she was about three years old, but was surprised to learn that she was really five years old. When she was brought to the shelter she could not walk, nor could she talk." She was the sweetest little girl determined to find her place in this world. Each week I went back and visited her and have since learned that she's been placed in a loving foster home with the opportunity to thrive.

These are just a few of the moments that have confirmed the call God has on my life. All too often, the things that break our hearts are the things we are called to be the answer to. These stories, that are forever ingrained in my heart, are there to compel me to share the love and compassion of Christ with these precious little lives. The lives that so desperately need the joy, peace, and hope that Christ has to offer. What is it that compels you to a life of compassion? He who calls you is faithful and will not fail to equip you for the journey.

In One Moment...

In one single moment a life can be impacted. Words have the power to build a person up or tear a person down. Some moments stand out more than others and are carried with us throughout a lifetime. While reading Wess Stafford's book titled "Just A Minute", I thought I would take the time to thank a few people who have impacted my life greatly even just for a moment.

Ms. Melissa Stokes, Shooting Stars School of Performing Arts:
Ms. Melissa, you will never know the impact you have made on my life. In the short amount of time I was blessed to spend at Shooting Stars, I learned by your example. Your bold, courageous, confidence as you entered the throne of God in prayer always inspired me. Whether it be before class, starting a routine, or going on stage at a competition, you made it clear that He would receive all of the glory no matter the outcome. You spoke God's promises over us and now they are forever ingrained in my head that "we are the head and not the tail, above and not beneath, blessed coming in and blessed going out." That promise manifested time and time again as Shooting Stars took home the prize. But more than gaining beautiful technique or winning competitions, you won souls. I am certain that you've impacted many, many lives beyond the dancers that come through your door. From parents, judges, and members in the audience. I cannot thank you enough for your commitment and dedication to pouring into the many lives that will forever be changed.

To the youth leadership at Seacoast Church:
My relationship with Christ flourished at Seacoast Church. Your guidance and encouragement launched me into the call God has on my life. It was under your leadership that I developed a strong passion for student-led prayer. Wando's Prayer at the Pole would not have begun if it wasn't for Elevation 2009: Uprising. Students were challenged to take a stand and cause an uprising for God in our generation. My dream is that one day students across the United States and even around the world will take a stand and begin each morning at their school's flag pole by praying for protection over the school, fellow students, faculty and staff. Seacoast Missions also impacted my life. It was my trip to Nicaragua in 2008 where my heart for orphans was reignited. Lastly, Seacoast small groups played a huge role in developing a daily devotion to Christ. I will forever remember each of my small group leaders and the influence they have had in my life. Thank you for devoting your time to the many students that go through the youth program.

My sweet mother, Vicki Billings:
For all the late nights you spent in my room praying over me when you thought I was sound asleep, or the countless number of sermons and "Positive Hits Z88.3" that played in the background of the car on our way to dance class. The power of a praying mother is effective. You taught me the importance of positively feeding your ears, eyes, and mind. The things one allows their ears to hear and their eyes to see ultimately come out in their words and actions. As an elementary schooler eating cereal at the breakfast table, I remember watching the ORU singers every morning on TV. Little did I know, my mom began sowing seed for one of her children to attend ORU. Years later, I am now a senior and will be graduating from ORU in May. You are the sweetest, kindest, and most loving person I know. You treat each person you come in contact with as if it was a divine appointment from Christ. You always have a sweet, soft smile on your face. God's favor goes before you, follows you, and surrounds you like a shield. I have never met a person who gets the front parking space every single time and then says, "Thanks God, I have favor." Simply saying thank you cannot cover the impact you have made on my life. If I can one day become even slightly like the wife, mother, and friend you have been, I would call it a blessing. I love you, Mom.

Waiting Warriors

I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. Psalm 130: 5

Wait: to remain stationary in readiness or expectation.
While waiting for the Lord, I do not believe that we are to remain unresponsive or shut down, but rather unshaken to the voices of defeat and distress that satan tries to feed our ears and eyes. When we do not see immediate results, we so often become quick to form negative thoughts concerning our situation. As  followers of Christ, we already know the "expected" result. That result is victory. Time and time again the Lord promises victory to His people in His written word. He is not trying to hide it from us. But satan on the other hand, tries to blind our minds from seeing what has already been given to us (2 Corinthians 4:4). Satan knows if we can get ahold of all the promises of God, he would be shut down.

What if we decided to make God's Word final authority for every circumstance and situation we face? What if we decided to stand up and fight back when satan tries to steal what has already been given to us? When Jesus died on the cross, we were given healing in our physical bodies, sound minds, peace, hope, and ultimately a life of abundance. These things were given to us as a gift and are rightfully ours. I encourage you to go to God's Word and find scripture to stand on. Write these verses down and pin them up where they can be seen multiple times a day. By doing so, your eyes are being fed the Word of God and ultimately your faith is being strengthened for whatever you may be facing. Lastly, speak the scripture you have chosen out of your mouth. You, more than anyone, will believe the words that come out of your own mouth. As an heir of God (Romans 8:17), fight back for what is yours. Put your hope in the victory you've already been given in and through Jesus Christ.

He Delights In Every Detail

The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Psalm 37:23

As a senior at Oral Roberts University, lately I have been looking back on the past three years of this amazing journey. I am beginning to see the puzzle pieces fit together and see God's hand at work from the start. Freshman year, I came into ORU as a nursing major. Certain that the Lord was calling me to nursing, I came to ORU to build a strong backbone in what the school has been known for; faith and healing. I knew that as a nurse, these were two extremely important elements that I would have to stand firm in.

I quickly came to realize that the hospital was no setting for me. I then switched to an education major. While I always knew that I wanted to work with kids, the classroom just wasn't for me. I went to the Lord for direction and He spoke to my spirit saying, "Amy, I want you to love children around the world." I began seeking other options and finally stumbled upon the social work program. After sharing my heart for orphans to a social work professor, she invited me to sit in on a class. The moment that class ended, I walked to registrar to fill out yet another major change request form. This time I was without a doubt I was where I was suppose to be.

If I would have began college as a social work major, I truly think that I would have chosen a state school closer to home, where everything was comfortable. Instead, the Lord opened all the right doors, created long lasting friendships, provided comfort being 18 hours away from home, and placed endless opportunities in my path. He has done more than I could have ever asked or imagined, just as He promises to do so. He has fulfilled dreams, such as traveling to China to work in an orphanage for a month. My heart has been molded in ways that could only be molded through such experiences. I've had the opportunity to work alongside a counselor at a school for pregnant and parenting teen girls. Last semester, I worked in an emergency children's shelter where I witnessed children being brought in from abusive and neglectful homes week after week. Each of these experiences have shaped me in order to fulfill the call that God has on my life. He even continues to surprise me with the little details, like the opportunity to take an equestrian class. He knows your hearts desires and loves to fulfill the hidden dreams in your heart that have been put on the back burner.

As I finish up my final year at ORU, close one chapter of my life and begin a new one, I am trusting and believing that God has only the greatest things in store. He delights in every detail of our lives. We have the choice to worry about out future, try to make things happen in our own strength and timing, or we can place it all before the throne of God, while we rest knowing that His plans stand firm, His timing is perfect, and He will direct the steps we need to take. He is the one who opens supernatural doors of opportunity and creates divine connections. When following the call of God, He is always faithful to be your God from start to finish.

Sweet Surrender

The importance of daily surrender to the King:
Last year while in China for a month, I realized the importance of surrendering all of me in order to be filled up with the fullness of Christ. These precious orphans depended on me to empty myself of my own agenda, strength, and will so that the Lord and His power could move in and through me. Give the Lord an inch to move and He will take a mile.

It's as easy as a simple prayer like this:

Father,  I give You my mind today. I set my thoughts on things above (Col. 3:2) and I thank You that as a child of God you have given me a sound mind (2 Tim. 1:7).

I give you my ears to hear Your still, small voice. Speak to me.

I give you my eyes to see Your children as You see them. I fix my eyes on You, Jesus, for You are the perfecter of faith (Hebrews 12:2).

I give you my mouth to speak words of life, to call things that are not as though they already are (Romans 4:17).

I give you my hands to be a healer, to lay hands on the sick and they will be healed (Mark 16:18).

I give you my feet to go where You call me to go. How beautiful are the feet of the messenger who brings good news, the good news of peace and salvation (Isaiah 52:7).

Finally, I give you my heart. Break my heart for what breaks Yours. Let the peace that comes from You rule in my heart, for You have called me to live in peace (Col. 3:15), without worry, doubt, or anxiety. I partner with Your heart today as I continue to pursue the call You have on my life.

Use me today Lord, I am completely Yours.

Walking Into 2013 Greater

2013. A year of fulfillment, blessings, and favor. I love new beginnings, receiving a second chance to improve, but how is it the moment we receive another shot the devil comes knockin' on our door reminding us of our past failures and regrets? We, as children of God, have the power to shut that door and keep it shut.

"I do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old, behold, You are doing a new thing in my life and now it shall spring forth" (Isaiah 43:18-91 paraphrase).

Our confession, what comes out of our mouths, is extremely powerful. It can make or break your situation. When we choose to speak God's Word, chains are broken, blind eyes are opened, sickness is no more. The devil must flee at the name of Jesus. Yes, must. When Jesus left this earth to be seated at the right hand of God, he left us his name. I pray that the Lord will make you aware of the power of His presence living in and through you this year. Make 2013 a year of doing everything in His name. Walk in His name, call things that are not as if they already are in His name. You are not defined by your past. This year the Lord is "doing a new thing in your life and now it shall spring forth." This is your year to walk in all that He has prepared for you.

"I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!" (John 14:12-14).
This is your year for greater.

Not For the Faint of Heart

God-sized dreams have been placed inside of you. These dreams are not placed there to escape reality nor to restrict you to the life you've been living. The Author of your dreams wants to take you to a new level, one that is not a life of settling for less than all that He has created you to be. Dreaming is not for the faint of heart. When God has given you a dream, it becomes a part of you, your thoughts, your way of living, and the way you see the world around you. Whether you've had a dream since you were young or you have a new dream, I urge you to press forward.

The first step is to picture your dream. Proverbs 29:18 says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." Dreaming is a source of hope. The second step is to write it out. Habakkuk 2:2 says, "And then God answered: 'Write this. Write what you see. Write it out in big block letters so that it can be read on the run. The vision-message is a witness pointing to what's coming. It aches for the coming- it can hardly wait! And it doesn't lie. If it seems slow in coming, wait. It's on it's way. It will come right on time'." Writing down your dream and setting goals takes us from a place of merely thinking to setting a plan of action, a plan that will set your eyes on the future. Lastly, I believe it is important to speak life over your dream. Romans 4:17 says, "We serve a God who gives life to the dead and speaks of nonexistent things as if they existed." When you begin to speak your dream, you begin to believe it. The tongue is a powerful weapon that can steer you to a life of abundance or a life of destruction. What are you speaking over your dream? You can begin by thanking God that His Word is true. The Word of God is filled with promises to speak over your dream such as,

  • The Lord shall command the blessing upon me in my storehouse in all that I undertake. The Lord makes me have a surplus of prosperity through the fruit of my body. He blesses me in the land which He gives me. -Deuteronomy 28:8,11
  • ...everything I do will prosper. -Psalm 1:3
  • He who calls you is faithful, and surely He will do it. -1 Thessalonians 5:24

Take the dreams God has given you, take action, and begin to watch how He will amaze you. Continually remember that these dreams are not your own, but rather a gift from the Lord. He has entrusted you with these dreams. Don't let others trample them, discourage them or distort them. These dreams belong to Him and can only be accomplished in and through Him. He's given you a unique dream that was specially designed for you. I pray that the Lord will ignite a new fire to the dream He has placed in your heart as you begin this journey.

He Who Calls You Is Faithful, Part II: The Journey To China

China. What an incredible experience, one that was beyond my wildest dreams. Each day was a day of surrendering my own energy, strength, schedule, and love in order to be filled up completely with the fullness of Christ. I quickly learned that I alone had nothing to offer to these orphans that would last, but rather an outpour of Christ's love that He has for us that I am able to give. I was sent to pray without ceasing, to stand in the gap for these little lives that had no control over their past circumstances.

After a week of ropes training and team building, a group of nine ORU students and I boarded a plane and headed to Beijing, China on May 13th. The fourteen hour flight seemed endless, however, we were ready for an adventure. We finally arrived on Tuesday the 15th around 12AM and headed out to New Day’s campus, where we would be living and working for the next month. New Day has three different aspects: a foster home, an english learning center, and a factory. The foster home houses about twenty-five orphans who have a medical need. When a child is found, he or she is then taken to a local orphanage by the police. These orphanages contact New Day when they are unable to attend to the orphan’s needs. New Day helps to get the child the surgery that he or she needs. Many of the children have a heart condition, Spina Bifida, clubbed limbs, cleft lip/ palate, deformed ears, Albinism or Down Syndrome. The english learning center is a school for students ages fifteen and up to improve their english before they head off to study abroad, usually in the United States. The factory creates inspirational products and gifts that are often found in Christian bookstores.

Years ago, God began to instill in me a heart for orphans. The moment I stepped foot in the foster home and saw these children, they instantly captured my heart. Each child at New Day had been rescued from abandonment in a local park, beside the railroad tracks, in a hotel, etc. When I held these precious children I couldn’t help but think who could abandon this little life?

This trip has confirmed my passion to be an advocate for the orphaned. Now that I have held these children in my own arms I cannot help but partner with the heart of Christ and continue to pursue the calling He has on my life. The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it (1 Thessalonians 5:24).

He Who Calls You Is Faithful, Part I

Faithful is He who calls you, and He will also bring it to pass. 1 Thessalonians 5:24
In just six weeks I will be boarding a plane and heading off to Beijing, China. Since eighth grade, I have dreamed of the opportunity to work in an orphanage. The Lord is so faithful to do the things that which He has called us as well as give us the desires He has placed in our heart. While in Beijing, my team and I will be working alongside New Day Foster Home. Because we are not able to speak the Gospel openly in China, we will be sharing the love of Christ through our actions. God has placed a love for children in my heart long ago. Even when I was a little girl, I carried a baby doll everywhere I went. That baby was treated as if he or she was a real child. They had car seats (which my mom would find at yard sales), real diapers, small cribs, blankets, the whole nine yards. As women, we are tender hearted and nurturing beings. That's the way God created us to be.
The past six months my team and I have been praying for these precious children in the orphanage. Each child has a story. Many of the children were abandoned somewhere, found by the police, and brought to New Day. The thing that breaks my heart the most is that these children have no control over their unfortunate circumstance. They did not choose to be deserted by someone who is suppose to love and cherish them. That is why I feel our role is so crucial. We have the hope and joy living on the inside of us, Jesus Christ. Through this trip my team and I will be able to share the love of Christ whether it be through holding a baby who is brand new to the orphanage, playing with the children, or relieving the hardworking staff. Because the staff is limited, each child is not able to receive the love and attention he or she needs to thrive.
Growing up, I always had a mother and father to tuck me in and kiss me goodnight. My family showed up for every tee ball game, dance recital, or chorus concert. It's my time to give back. To be able to love these children whether it be through a hug or smile is the very least I can do. God has a special plan for each one of these children. We're called to bring hope where His light is seen dim and His voice is heard small...

Dare To Ask Boldly

Our God is beyond capable and more than willing to provide for the things we ask for if we ask with right motives and believe Him for it. Recently in my life, I found myself challenging God as if to say, "okay God, I'm only going to ask for this because I don't want to ask for too much". He spoke to my heart saying, "Amy, do you realize that's like Me saying 'I know you're capable of performing at this level, but I only want you to do the minimum'?" For instance, dance is something I am passionate about and have had the opportunity to do since I was three years old. It's something I like to be challenged in. Then God put an example on my heart. "Limiting Me is like saying I know you can do three pirouettes, but I only want you to do one." I grew up watching my brother play baseball and thought what if God said, "Richie, I know you're capable of hitting a home run, but this time I only want you to hit a single." When we are gifted with something we delight in using all of our talents, not just the bare minimum. God delights in amazing us. He loves giving us immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).

So the first step is simply asking. Next, we must believe that God is working behind the scenes and thank Him in advance, as an act of faith, for what is to come. It's important to go to His Word, find promises that line up with what you're believing, and memorize them. Get them deep down in your heart. Then, when satan tries to bring doubt you will be left unshaken, able to stand on the Word of God because you know that you know that you know God is faithful (reliable, trustworthy, and therefore ever true to His promise, and He can be depended on) 1 Corinthians 1:9

God would love nothing more than to leave you standing in awe of Him. He is a loving God who wants to bless every area of your life. How much more will your Father Who is in heaven [perfect as He is] give good and advantageous things to those who keep on asking Him! (Matthew 7:11). He wants you to ask. Don't hold back. Don't be hindered by what you see in the natural world, or circumstances that look impossible. God is a God of abundance and nothing is impossible for Him. I'm standing on the promise that The same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

You Are Chosen, Don't Wait!

As I was sitting in my social work class on September 1st, 2011, I heard a quote that I will never forget. "The thing you most grumble about is the thing you are the answer to. Don't wait!"(Cindy Jacobs). I sat there repeating it over and over again in my head. Immediately my heart began to stir and those issues that got under my skin began to fill my mind. How much longer could I go just thinking about the number of children who are abused and neglected each day, or children who are placed in foster shelters left feeling abandoned without a mother or father to kiss him or her goodnight? What was I waiting on?
Two weeks later, I got the opportunity to visit a children’s shelter where the kids were taken out of their home because they had been abused or neglected. When I went outside to the area where the young children were playing, I noticed a boy about a year old running around with one shoe on. The minute he noticed me watching him, he ran over and reached out his arms to be picked up. As soon as I picked him up, his face lit up with the biggest smile I have ever seen and he hugged me tightly. The joy of being able to care for a child in need like this is indescribable. It was hard to leave the little boy that night, but I knew that I poured out all of the love I had and I left knowing that he was in God’s hands and God had his best interest in mind.
God is not looking for someone who holds the perfect resume and all of the tools needed to change the world. He is simply looking for availability. First, we must become available to be used by Him, asking for the help and guidance of His Spirit. Then, His Spirit living inside of us will do the work of which we cannot accomplish in our own human strength. He will download God-sized visions and solutions into your heart. Paul writes in Ephesians 2:10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. He already created you to have specific passions long before you knew what they were. He has chosen you. "You didn't choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name." John 15:16
I don't know about you, but knowing that God has chosen me makes me feel desired and wanted. His promises give me the faith I need to believe when He says to ask for what we need. Next, we must take action. God has different plans for each of us but one thing we can do is reach out. We have the answer inside of us, Jesus Christ, and the hurting people in this world are just waiting to meet Him, whether it be through serving, a conversation, or simply the joy of the Lord shining through you.
Find that thing you most grumble about and take action. We are called to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Proverbs 31:8). We are to be advocates for those who are in need, just as Jesus is our Advocate who pleads our case before the Father (1 John 2:1).
While I, myself, don't have all of the solutions to poverty, child abuse, or world hunger I'm continuing to trust my Creator, be led where His Spirit leads me, reach out and take action when He downloads creative ideas into my heart. For He who calls you is faithful, and surely He will do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:24

The Wardrobe God Designed For You

So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It's your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it. Colossians 3:12-14 (The Message)

Keeping up with the latest trends and fashions cannot only be tiring but unfulfilling as well. Instead, we are called to dress in the wardrobe God has uniquely designed for us. First we'll start with compassion. Having a heart that breaks for others just as Jesus' heart does. That feeling you get deep down in the pit of your stomach that doesn't go away until you do something to help solve the solution. Next is kindness. Showing kindness simply means being friendly. Kindness is going about your day sharing the beautiful smile on your face that God has given you. Humility. Putting others before yourself just as Jesus did. Humbly serving others despite whether you are rewarded or complimented for your good deeds. As a woman, this next one may be tough for some. Quiet strength. It has been said that an average woman speaks approximately 20,000 words a day. Whether you're below, average, or above average, God's wardrobe calls for a quiet strength. This is not to say you must be silent, but rather listen twice as much as you talk. When you talk, talk because you have something to say. Encourage others, giving advice in love when the door is opened to speak. Discipline is an act of training, a motivation deep within, striving towards a goal. Ceasing to quit until that goal is reached. This could mean being discipline in your prayer life, refusing to give up praying until God has accomplished His purpose. Be even- tempered and not easily irritated. Content with second place. There are much bigger things in life than having to be first all of the time. God will not overlook you. We are also told to be quick to forgive others just as quickly and willing as Jesus was to take up the cross and  die for our sins. Last but not least, love. A word often taken all too lightly. To love someone is to care for them just as Christ cares for us. He is our ultimate model of love. No matter what their past looks like, their race, their size, or who they hang out with, we are called to wear love. Never leave without it. Even the most beautiful dress in the world does not compare to God's wardrobe. A mysterious beauty is added when a worldly wardrobe is set aside and replaced with God's wardrobe. People will begin to see that radiant shimmer of hope in your life, Jesus Christ, and be left standing captivated in awe of His beauty.

God Sees The Real Us

My professor once said, "God sees the real us, we don't even see the real us." I've heard that phrase before in many different ways but it never really hit me. Every flaw that I or others may see does not exist when God looks at me. God sees you as His beautiful, radiant, genuine princess. Nothing you have done in the past nor do in the future will change His perception of you. Pure, stainless, white as snow. What a loving and gracious God we serve. When He looks at you, He sees everything that you were created to be. You are made perfect in His image and remain the apple of His eye.

Authenticity...

What does it mean to be authentic? Original, faithful, pure, trustworthy, credible, valid,  certain. Each of these things can be found in your identity in Christ. I once read a paraphrased quote from Leslie Ludy's book "Authentic Beauty" that had much truth and meaning. She quoted Oswald Chambers in saying, "By realizing the reality of our Prince within us, we are never bothered again by the fact that we do not understand ourselves, or that other people do not understand us. The only One who truly understands me is the One who made me and redeems me... It is a tremendous freedom to get rid of every kind of self- consideration and learn to care about only one thing- the relationship between our Prince and ourselves." Why does this concept seem to be so difficult? Our world today screams "you won't be happy until you have this" or "you need to be the best", but what we often times overlook as a Christ follower is that we truly have all that we need living on the inside of us. Our identity should be found in the One who created us, who knows us best. When we begin to tap into this realization, we no longer worry about pleasing others. It breaks my heart to live in a generation where eating disorders are started by young teenage girls because they feel as if they don't add up to the woman on the cover of "Vogue". An authentic woman of God is one who is original. It's time this generation stands up and accepts others for who they are rather than producing replicas of the same image. I believe that many insecurities would be erased if people were confident in being themselves. Trust the Creator with the creation He made. Love each individual for their unique gifts that He's given them. In doing these things, freedom is found.
